VUI design research, tips, and "best practices"
VUIs are quickly becoming the "next big thing" in interface design and Human-Computer Interaction. So, as you'd expect, there's quite a bit of ongoing research into how to make them better, faster, cheaper, and more enjoyable.

Here are a few of some of the best articles and resources we've found at Colla Voce, to keep you up to date on the latest thinking in VUI design:

  • 10 Guidelines for Designing Successful VUIs
From SpeechTek 2004, various presenters and authors, as gathered by James Larson, Ph.D.
    (Appears in a separate window)
  • Clifford Nass, Ph.D. of Stanford University is doing fascinating research into the nature of human intelligence, how it differs from artificial intelligence, and the implications for voice interfaces. You may have seen Dr. Nass on the PBS television show "Do You Speak American?"
  • "Read my Lips: Know New Faxes!", an article by Charles Kreitzberg, first appeared in the Falll/Winter 2003 issue of User Experience, the magazine of the Usability Professionals' Association. It speaks to the dramatic improvements in voice recognition when visual lip reading is added to conventional audio recognition.
